1st Day In Vancouver

Woke up to a glorious sunny day. We took the tourist "Hop on Hop Off Bus" around Vancouver and visited some famous land marks. Stanley Park is one of the world's great city parks with a sea wall, surrounding it on 3 sides, where the locals run, cycle or roller blade for exercise. We were impressed by the display of Totem Poles there.

Back on the bus to Gastown which is the re-developed heart of old Vancouver, now a mix of shops, bars and restaurants. It was originally developed around a tavern established by "Gassy Jack" from Yorkshire.

We walked from Gastown to visit the Sails of Canada Place where the massive cruise ships dock and the long pier which gives sensational views.

From there we hopped back on the bus to Granville Island, just having enough time to visit the public market and some of the many craft shops before a walk around the island's sea wall back to our hotel for an evening meal with a stunning lookout, over the motor yachts berthed just outside, to Vancouver city itself.

Getting here!

semi-overcast -16 °C

It's now 9.15 pm in Vancouver which means we've been up for 22 hours and feel we need to get some sleep very soon. The plane journey was good and passed reasonably well. We flew over the vast wastelands of northern Canada which seemed to go on forever. The view of the Rockies from the plane was fantastic!!
We are staying at The Granville Island Hotel om Granville Island in Vancouver, though its more of a triangular peninsular than an island. This was on the recommendation of Kevin and Dense stayed here a few years ago and we're very glad they told us about it, it's a lovely hotel on the waterfront with great views of Downtown Vancouver across the water. Granville Island itself is very quirky with arts and craft shops converted from some of Vancouver's industrial heritage. We have had a walk around this evening but the shops were closed - so hopefully another day.........
Our first impressions are that we like Vancouver very much!!

Can't get the photos in the correct order Sorry. Colin

All packed and ready to go!!

Driving to Manchester tomorrow to stay in the Travelodge at the airport - yes we're starting the holiday in style!!
The flight times have changed to later the following day but the hotel was booked so we decided to keep the booking. The flight should take 10 hours and we will arrive in Vancouver mid afternoon, hopefully not feeling too jet lagged.

And We're Off!!!...............................

Our Travel Plans, Colin, Barbara and Chris

-13 °C

We have been looking forward to this holiday for a VERY long time. In 2007 we had a fantastic holiday in New Zealand staying in hotels at the start and end of the holiday and touring the 2 islands in a motorhome in between. We enjoyed it so much that we were determined to do the same thing in Canada, a place we have always wanted to visit.
We will be flying into Vancouver with 3 nights stay there. We have been told that there is lots to see and do there so we're hoping we have enough time to see the main attractions
We then pick up the RV and travel across British Columbia and in to Alberta where we will be travelling the Icefields Parkway from Jasper to Banff.
An overnight stay on the outskirts of Calgary because we have to drop off the RV early in the morning and then 2 nights in a hotel in the centre of Calgary before flying home.
Canada is a massive country and we will only be visiting a very small area but we wanted the holiday to be relaxing and so decided not to try to cram too many places in to this holiday.

Just a few more days to the start of our adventure!!!
